Finally, the 2016 herring have arrived!
Today was my very first time having a proper look at this event, and I can tell you it’s great fun. The herring arrive in such great numbers that their clouds of spawn colour every little cove blueish green, with vast and viscous masses of the stuff visible from every viewpoint in Neck Point Park, where I was today.
Thankfully, there’s more to the event than just funky-coloured water, the main attraction of these spawning herring is the free sea lion show that comes along with it. These great big beasts have followed the herring right up to the coast and now swim through the spawn to pick off the exhausted fish one by one.
